Free Wheeling Hubs – Set Screwed to Locked Position

Published May 19, 2014 By Mick Farmer

Found this on an up-armoured Toyota Landcruiser.  Armouring company had done it.

Quite a good demonstration about how free wheeling hubs are a waste of time.

Who wants to break the seal by getting out and putting them to lock, to enable the front wheels to receive drive when 4wd is selected, when bad stuff goes down.

Getting rid of them completely would have been better as the vehicle went in for maintenance and the mechanics put the insides into free and left the outside looking locked. So of course this meant that the front wheels were not driven when in 4wd.

Found this out when they returned for training. We spent half an hour putting them right again. This could have been a reason, amongst many, why the vehicle had got badly bogged down on a mission in the previous few months.
